Climate Connect XR: Using Extended Reality for Climate Action

This project aims to use extended reality technologies to create immersive climate change experiences that foster empathy and reduce psychological distance, ultimately motivating individuals and policymakers to adopt pro-environmental beliefs and actions.

Climate change is the defining issue of our time, yet many struggle to connect with its urgency. At present, the most effective interventions to inspire climate beliefs and motivate behaviors are challenging to experience first-hand. These include decreasing psychological distance, communicating with future generation members or one’s future self, and strong emotion induction. Using extended reality technologies, this project will build, test, and deliver immersive climate change experiences to learners, decision-makers, and policymakers to promote empathy for communities facing climate change and decrease psychological distance for climate action. Together, we can move the needle on pro-environmental beliefs and actions!
