Abraham Verghese, MD is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor and Vice Chair for the Theory and Practice of Medicine, Department of Medicine, at Stanford University. He is a practicing physician and a writer whose most recent book, Cutting for Stone spent two years on the bestseller list.  He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and was awarded the National Humanities medal by President Obama in 2016.
