Amal Al Gergawi, from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, is pursuing a PhD in oceans at Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social research and public policy with a minor in economics from New York University Abu Dhabi, and dual master’s degrees from the University of Oxford. As extreme weather events and coastal development pressures intensify, Amal aspires to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of marine ecosystems and frontline communities by blending computational, field, and participatory approaches. She served four years as a Kawader Research Fellow at the Burt Marine Biology Lab, covered adaptation and ocean mandates as a climate negotiator to the UAE special envoy for climate change, and sits on the board of the marine conservation nonprofit Azraq. Amal is a recipient of the International Union for Conservation of Nature UAE Young Leader Award, the Rhodes Scholarship, and the First-Class Order of Zayed II Presidential Medal.
