Eliza Haines

Eliza Haines, from Charlotte, North Carolina, will be pursuing a master’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford School of Engineering after earning a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering with minors in electrical engineering and American Sign Language (ASL) studies from Clemson University. Eliza aspires to develop new neurotechnologies to engineer a more accessible world. During a research internship at Duke University, she developed novel machine learning techniques to improve brain-computer interfaces, increasing access to communication and human connection for paralyzed individuals. She presented her research at the AAAI-26 Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Singapore. The theme of human connection and accessibility also informs her ASL work. During her time at Clemson, she served as secretary of the ASL Club, led a project to educate elementary students about hearing health and Deaf culture, and signed at church services to make them more accessible.
