Chicago, Illinois, United States
Greta Markey, from Chicago, Illinois, is pursuing a PhD in civil engineering at Stanford School of Engineering & Doerr School of Sustainability. As an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon University, she researched desalination technologies and the intersection of low-income housing and water, and she graduated with dual degrees in civil engineering and engineering and public policy. As a Marshall Scholar, she completed a master of science degree in environment and international development and is currently studying for a master’s in water science, policy, and management at the University of Oxford. Greta aspires to improve the way civil engineers incorporate processes of justice and equity into water system design. Her previous research in rural Alaska determines how technical aspects of infrastructure systems impact affordability, access, and use outcomes. Her work has been recognized by the American Water Works Association and the American Society of Civil Engineers, and she was selected as an Andrew Carnegie Society Scholar by Carnegie Mellon.
