Isabel Orlanes Gallegos, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, is pursuing a PhD in computer science at Stanford School of Engineering and a JD in Law at Stanford Law School. She earned a joint BS and MS in computer science and a minor in education from Stanford in 2023. Isabel aspires to study algorithmic fairness to interrogate the role of artificial intelligence in equitable decision-making, working alongside interdisciplinary collaborators in public policy and law to shape accountability and governance of emerging computing capabilities. She has worked in the Stanford Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab), investigating the encoding of race in health care data and its downstream impact on antidiscrimination law, as well as the Stanford Laboratory of Quantitative Imaging and Artificial Intelligence, Sandia National Laboratories, Microsoft, Apple, and Jane Street Capital. Isabel has been awarded two patents and received national computing awards for her work.
