Madeline Materna

Madeline Materna, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is pursuing a PhD in political science with a focus on international relations at Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. She graduated summa cum laude from Drake University and with highest honors from Emory University, where she received her JD. Madeline aspires to reduce humanitarian suffering in wartime through her research on the role of law and global politics in constraining armed conflict. While in law school, she worked with the Secretary of State’s Office for Global Criminal Justice, the Marine Corps University Command and Staff College, and the Military Academy at West Point. After graduating, she worked as an attorney at Sidley Austin, where she represented asylees and refugees applying for permanent residency in the United States through her pro bono engagements. Madeline has published on issues relating to international human rights law.
