Sandesh Kalantre, from Maharashtra, India, is pursuing a PhD in physics. He has a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), and did graduate work at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park. As an undergraduate, he studied mesoscopic devices at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He is excited by the ongoing revolution in quantum science and technology and the future of computing devices based on quantum physics. He hopes to exploit this technology in the study of materials and improve understanding of matter at ultra-low temperatures. He was awarded the Institute Silver Medal at IITB, an OeAD ISTernship, and an S.N. Bose Fellowship, and he held a Lanczos Graduate Fellowship at UMD.
