Tom Rutter, from Salisbury, U.K., is pursuing a PhD in economics at Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a bachelor’s degree in economics and from the London School of Economics with a master’s degree in econometrics and mathematical economics. Tom aspires to better understand the role of information, beliefs, and preferences in determining economic outcomes. Some of his current projects focus on characterizing the consequences of noncontractibility for the structure of economic networks, identifying the degree to which individuals suffer costs from resisting temptation, and mapping out the distribution of social capital in the U.K. Tom previously worked at Harvard studying the determinants of social capital in the United States, and as an undergraduate research assistant at Caltech studying intertemporal choice.
