Yannai Kashtan, from Oakland, California, is pursuing a PhD in chemistry at Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics and chemistry from Pomona College. Yannai aspires to be a part of the solution to climate change, and plans to research artificial photosynthesis, the process of using energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into useful chemicals. He has studied how charge carriers move in organic semiconductors with an eye toward improving organic solar cells, researched catalytic SO2 activation, and was an intern at Biodesy working on cell-free protein synthesis. Yannai was elected to the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society and to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
